THE CHIEF CRICKETERS IN 1896. 27* M ason , J. R. (Winchester). — Has scored consistently throughout the season, and is second in the batting averages, with 28 03; has a finished style of batting, is a very smart slip, and a good change bowler; played for the Gentlemen against the Players. M kyiuck -J ones , Rev. F. (Cambridge).—A really fine batsman ; unfortunately for the County, unable to play often. M ordaunt , G. J. (Wellington and Oxford).—Plays for Kent. P atter son , W. H. (Harrow' and Oxford).—A fair and taking bat, with un­ wearying defence; also a fair change bowler and good field; plays little now. P e rk in s , T. N. (Cambridge).—A very good batsman, hitting hard all round the wicket; an admirable out-field ; unable to play in 1895. R a s h l e ig h , Rev. W . (Tonbridge and Oxford).— A fine batsman, with a great variety of strokes, and scores very fast when once in ; was very successful when he played, wdiich was not often. S tewta r t , H. C.—Plays in good style; excellent field; not quite so successful in 1895. W eigall , G. J. V. (Wellington and Cambridge).—Has improved greatly as a batsman, and invariably scores on a hard wicket; has an elegant style, cutting being his strong point; did not play much in 1895. W ilson , L. (Tonbridge).—A really good bat, able to make runs on any wicket; unfortunately for the County only able to play once in 1895. L A N C A SH IR E . B ard sw ell , G. R. (Uppingham and Oxford).—Plays for Lancashire. B enton , C. H. (Hairow).—Good batsman, with plenty of hit, and capital field. C ro sf ie ld , S. M.—A good bat and splendid field; has retired from County cricket. H ornby , A. N. (Harrow).—Siill a dangerous bat, hitting very freely ; as energetic as ever in the field; only played twice for the County in 1895. H ouldsworth , W. L. H.—A promising player; hits very hard, and is useful in the out-field; did not play for the County in 1895. H ubback , T. R.—Excellent reserve wicket-keeper; very fair batsman ; did not play for County in 1895. M c L a r en , A. C. (Harrow).—One of the very best amateur batsmen in England, having splendid defence, with plenty of punishing power; played very fine cricket in the latter part of last season, and had the fine average of58T0 foi his County, heading the general averages with 51*20, and played one fine innings of 424 for Lancashire v. Somerset, and holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class matches; in addition he scored three consecutive centuries for Lancashire in the County Championship contest. 1 P llk ington , C. C. (Eton).—A stylish and powerful batsman, a good slow bowler, and a safe field at point; played twice for Lancashire in 1895, and should prove a valuable acquisition to the team with more experience in first-class cricket. R ow ley , E. B.—A good bat and smart field; ought to be of use to the County later on. T in d a l l , S. M . —Plays free cricket with any amount of pluck; a good field - did not play often for the County in 1895, and was not as successful as in 1894.
