James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

TIIE UNIVERSITIES AND TUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1895. 207 L oretto E leven in 1895.—*7?. Waterhouse , captain (1893-5) : Much improved as a bat, with much more defence than last year, and good powers of scoring. A fine deep field, covering a lot of ground, with a magnificent return, and a safe catch. An energetic captain, keeping his team well together. *A . St. J. WoodcocJc: A very useful oa t ; a free hitter and fast scorer, but lacking in defence. Disappointing as a bowler; might be really good if he pitched up more. A sure field, with a safe pair of hands. * W. J. Thomson: On a fast wicket a fine bat, with sound defence and good attack, but makes too many mistakes when the ground is soft. A good wdcket-keeper, though perhaps not quite so sure as last year. *J. F. A. Swavston : When he once gets set a very difficult wicket to get; has unlimited patience, and a good cut. His fielding has unaccountably fallen off. * IV. M. Greig : Has a good eye, and on several occasions has played some fine free cricket; but he has little defence, and a weak stroke on the leg side. A fair ground field, but not a safe catch. J. Harper Qrr : Against weak hatting a very useful slowr bowler, with fair pitch and a puzzling break. A most disappointing bat; takes great pains, but too apt to try to score off difficult balls. A fair field. G. C .Glenny: A painstaking bat; reaches well forward, but weak in back play. A good catch and sound field. It. Ross : Works very hard in the field, and has a fair return. Occasionally bowded wTith success. As a bat not very scientific, but dogged and powerful. A. C. Cunningham: A steady bowler, with some command o f pitch, and on his day difficult to score off. A slow' but hard-working field. As a bat plays rather mechanically, but once or twice has done well. G Water- house : A good ground field in the deep, returning the ball well. Not a safe catch, and a poor bat. P. McFadden : A fair change bowder, wdio has done some capital performances wdth the tail of a team. A keen and improving but clumsy field. Bats in a style of his own.
