James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
190 lillywhitf / s cricketers ' annual . B utton S chool E leven in 1895.—! * A . Kcclcs (captain) : At his best one of the finest cricketers we have ever had. Perhaps rather short of strokes, but has splendid defence and great command over the ball. A grand field, and most useful and sometimes dangerous bowler. Captained his team with judgment and energy. *F. //. Bryant: Hits magnificently. Ought to be a good cricketer, but has neither the necessary patience nor determination. Did some capital things at point during the season. *G. K. Burnett-Stuart : Wonderfully improved on his last year’s performances. Is now a really good school bowler; ought to be heard of at Oxford. Fields brilliantly on the off side, covering a great deal of ground. An original batsman. *F. A. Lee : Plays as accurately as ever, and improved in vigour. Has the making of a first-class bat. Very slow and stiff in the field. Kept wicket at times with fair success. *J. G. L. Farrar: Disappointing cricketer. Has extraordinary power, and played one or two good innings, but as yet is not likely to score in good company. Most dependable field anywhere, with a safe pair of hands. *C. IF. //. Cochrane : More than once came to the rescue of the side, and unquestionably bowls a very difficult ball. Unsuccessful bat and slow field. *11. G. Curgenven: Scored largely at the beginning of the season, but, mainly owing to ill-health, w’as not in much form afterwards. A fair change howler on slow wickets, and at times a good short slip. *C. F. Lance : Hard hitting bat, with plenty of strokes, but not much defence. Brilliant and trust worthy field anywhere. F. It. I). Monro: Very steady, useful change bowler. Bats in bad style, but has undoubted defence. Fair field. F. S. Smallmood: Played capit illv in the school matches. Has plenty of nerve, and ought to train into a good cricketer. *K. L. Hartland: Has worked his very hardest, without much corresponding success. Safe and quick ground field, but apt to miss catches. ROSSALL SCHOOL, Captain for 1895.—G. P. Wilson. Results o f Matches.
