James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

184 l i l l y w h i t e ’ s c r i c k e t e r s ’ a n n u a l . L ancino C ollege E leven in 1895. — A. 11. Goodall: Has captained the t<iun lint without judgment, and his slow left-hand bowling has been invaluable to his side, lias improved latterly as a bat, and with a stronger defence would get a lot of runs, but at present is not likely to get any very big scores. Fair field. *A. S. Hope: Very steady and reliable bat. Has made great improve ment this season, hut still lacks power and freedom ; runs consequently come slowly. Accurate but slow in the field. T. 11. Fonder: A wicket-keep some way above the average, who has rendered invaluable service to the team. A steady bat, and one who can hit, but must take care his rustic strokes do not overpower him. *T. J . Mercer: Likely to become a good all-round cricketer with practice and experience, but still lacks confidence in himself. Has done very useful pieces of work with the bat. At times a useful medium right-hand bowler. *7. T. Simpson: A good bat at times, but varies. Has played one or two useful innings, including the top score of the season. Slack in the field. *.1/. M. Kniyht: lias in no way fulfilled last year’s promise. His batting is very uncertain after his first few overs, which are generally played with care ; has played one useful innings. A fair out field. IL F. Cordate: A promising bat with a nice cut, and has played two or three useful innings. Likely to make a good howler, getting on a lot of work when helped by the wicket. A poor field, owing to nervousness. mT. C. Lucas : A wonderfully improved bat, especially on the leg side, and pulls short balls with effect. A good point on occasion. S. //. hankes: A powerful and hard-hitting bat, rather apt to indulge in rustic strokes ; prefers the leg side for his runs. At times tries to score too quickly. A reliable catch on the boundary. *Q. F. F. Allen: A fast right-hand bowler. Has l»owled with some success on this year’s bumpy wicket, but is erratic in his pitch. Has made a lot of runs at times, going in late. A good catch, but slow in picking up and returning the ball. A. S. Covey: A medium right- hand bowler; has varied during the season, but improved towards the end. If he would only keep off the leg, and not try to bowl too fast, might develop into a useful bowler. By no means a despicable bat, and hits hard. MALVERN COLLEGE. Captain for 1895.—E. H. Simpson.
