Ranjitsinhji’s residential qualification gave Sussex a batsman, at the present almost without a superior, to strengthen an already fairly strong batting side. Still, in spite of his consistent brilliant play, and the run-getting capacities of the side on good wickets, the bowling was mostly of a moderate character, with, perhaps, the one exception of Tate. On the generally hard pitches Parris, who is particularly effective when the ground gives any great help, was comparatively harniless. Unfortunately, Alfred Shaw was only able to pl£y twice, and as what changes there were had little sting in them, the Sussex eleven had to depend mostly on their batting. Strong as they were on a good wiefiet, when things favoured the bowlers they were something of an unknown quantity. Humphreys, it may be added, wras practically discarded after the earlier matches, no doubt for good reasons. Still, that his lobs would have been very useful was proved by his success in the match with Cambridge University. As it was Sussex only won five and lost nine matches during the season, so that they were considerably on the wrong side. R e su lt s o f M atches . Matches played, 18 ; icon, 5; draton, 4 ; lost, 9.
