James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
THE COUNTIES IN 1805. 127 (5) S u r r e y v. Cam br idge U n ivers ity . Ovaly Aug . 23, 24 and 25. Although they were singularly unlucky in having only nine wickets to fall owing to an injury to N. P . Druce, who had to retire hurt after playing a brilliant innings, the University did well to score 263. Of these nearly one- half were contributed by the brothers Druce, W. G. (the captain) s c o r i n g 71 and N. F. (retired hurt) 50. Against this Surrey made 543, of which Holland's score was 171, Abel’s 165, and Hayward’s 81 (not out). Abel and Holland put on 306 in three hours and twenty minutes for the third wicket. Curiously, Holland was dismissed by C. E. M. Wilson, who, after being unsuccessful with his right hand, tried left round arm and bowled Holland. In the second innings of Cambridge W. G. Grace, jun., was highest scorer with 32. Surrey won by an innings and 148 runs. Surrey, 543. Cambridge University, 263 and 132; total, 395. (6) S u r rey v . England. Ovzl, May 27, 28 and 29. A testimonial match for Mr. W. W. Read in recognition of his long and brilliant services for Surrey. The first time, too, that Surrey had played England for thirty years. Mr. Stoddart was playing for Middlesex v. Essex, and the Yorkshire Committee would not let Brown and Peel off, though the County was only playing Oxford University. Otherwise England was well represented, and, as the game showed, far too strong for Surrey. Still, the cricket shown by the Surrey eleven was far below their usual standard, and, on the form of the match, they fully deserved to lose. Pougher’s bowling was, perhaps, the best feature on the side of England. Albert Ward, though he played fine cricket during the latter part of his innings, was badly missed when he had made five.
