James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

THE COUNTIES IN 1 8 9 5 . 1 2 8 (7) S om e rse tsh ire v . Cambridge U n iv e rs ity . Cambridge , May 13, 14 and 15. Unfortunately for Somersetshire Tyler was unable to play, and the loss of his bowling was very severely felt. It was a high-scoring match throughout, as 1,106 runs in all were scored for 33 wickets. On each side one batsman got very near the second hundred, Mr. F. Mitchell contributing 191 to the Univer sity’s first innings of 390, and Mr. S. M. J. Woods 180 to Somersetshire’s second of 330. One piece of bowling stood out far above the rest. Thanks to Mr. L. Palairet (98) at one time in Somersetshire’s first innings 200 was up with only three batsmen out. That the total only reached 221 was due mainly to the bowling of C. E. M. Wilson, who took seven wickets for only 24 runs. Cambridge won by seven wickets. Cambridge University, 390 and 165 (3 wickets) ;* total, 555. Somersetshire 221 and 330 ; total, 551. (8) S om e rse tsh ire v . O x fo rd U n iv e rs ity . Oxford , May 2 0 , 21 and 2 2 . Although the wicket was not quite of the best the scoring on both sides was fairly good. Neither side had its full strength, as Somersetshire were without Mr. G. Fowler, Captain Hedley, and Nichols, and Oxford without Messrs. Raikes and Fry. Though none of the four innings reached 300, the lowest total was 176. The Oxford captain, Mr. G. J. Mordaunt, was the highest scorer with 70, and, indeed, the three highest scores belonged to the University, with G. R. Bardswell (69) second, ana H. D. Leyeson-Gower (65), third. The best bowling of the match was in Somersetshire’s first innings, It was by Mr. H. A. Arkwright, who took seven wickets for 32 runs. The University won an exciting match by one wicket. Oxford, 261 and 214 (9 wickets *, total, 475. Somersetshire, 176 and 296 ; total, 472. BATTING AVERAGES IN INTER-COUNTY MATCHES. Mr. L. C. H. Palairet Inns. . . . 25 Mr. S. M. J.
