James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
LIMA WHITF.’ s ( UICKBTElts’ ANNUAL. 1 16 NO TT INGH AM SH IRE . O fktckus pok 1895.— /'resident: Win. Wright. Vic*-President: The Mayor of Nottingham. C om m i t t e e : Lord Helper, 11. Edwards, S. McCrae, W. Hollins, l)r. G. B. White, J. Forman, G. M. Royle, W. H. Speed, Dr. Dixon, W. E. Denison, Capt. Tomasson, J. A. Dixon. Hon. Secretary: W. Wright, Wollaton, Notts. Secretary : H. Turner, Lucerne House, West Bridgford, Notts. T h a t only three out of eighteen matches should have been won is a sufficient indication that the all-round cricket of the Notts eleven was very faulty in some way or other. The want of rising young players had been conspicuous for some years. It was hound to have a serious effect some time or other, and the time arrived sooner, perhaps, than was expected. The bowling in particular had been i. radually decreasing in quality as well as quantity, till at last there was only one reliable bowler in William Attewell. All the same, the worst of luck, it must 1)0 admitted, befel Notts throughout the summer. Arthur Shrewsbury happily was able to play towards the latter part of the season. Still, he was not in 'the best of health, and, though still successful, hardly the batsman he was. Nor was Gunn in anything like the best fettle. An injury kept Flowers, too, out of one or two matches in the middle of the season. To add to their misfortunes, Pike, who had shown himself such a capable wicket-keeper in 1894, hurt his hand so badly that he was not able to keep at all, and Hardstaff, a likely l>owler, though the wickets were hardly of a kind to help him, could only play rarely. On several occasions Notts showed themselves a fairly good batting ide, and a little more bowling would work a great change in their fortunes. Results o f Matches.
