James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
108 LILLY WHITE’ S CRICKBTKK s ’ ANNUAL* LEICESTERSHIRE, O fiicers ron 1895:— President: Sir A. R. Palmer, Bart. lion. Secretary: T. Burdett, 21, Saxe-Coburg Street, Leicester. T he promise of the first match of the season, which produced a highly credit able victory over Surrey was, it is to be regretted, in no way fulfilled. Succes sive defeats of Surrey and Notts excited hopes which were rudely shattered by the consistent failure of the eleven after they beat Essex at Leyton on June 5. Woodcock’s fast bowling, which had proved so effective in May, was quite harmless later on ; and Rougher, too, was certainly not as dangerous as usual. Tougher's all-round cricket was towards the end not up to its usual standard, and the County suffered materially in consequence. During the latter part of the season the eleven certainly did not play up to their real form. The batting was as disappointing as the bowling, it must be admitted. Mr. De Trafford’s hitting was less successful, and though Tomlin, Pougher, and Holland all were fairly reliable, on the whole Leicestershire had not a run-getting side. In Knight the County introduced a young batsman who is likely to be of great use in the future. Results o f Matches. Matches ployed , 1G ; tvouy 3 ; drawn, 3 ; lost , 10. Opponents. Where played.
