James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
IOC (11) Lancashire v. Sussex. LILLYWHITF.V CRICKETERS ANN1 AL. Brighton. Aug. 12, 13 and 14. Sussex opened in such lamentable fashion as to utterly destroy all their chances. Lancashire responded with a fine total of 265, in which Smith managed to carry out his bat for a well-got 67. The third day was spent by Sussex in playing for a draw and by Lancashire straining every nerve to win. Mr. Braun, who was at the wicket three hours, and Bean (49) made a useful stand, and the amateur’s 56 was really admirable. Still, at the finish Lancashire only wanted 84 to win, and this number cost them six good bats- men. Lancashire won by four wickets. Sussex. 102 and 246; total, 348. A remarkably exciting game, suggesting the memorable tie match of 1894. The wicket was at the outset difficult from rain, and Surrey put their opponents in, not altogether wisely as the result proved. In any case, the bowlers had all the advantage, and only one batsman on each side, Mr. A. C. McLaren (52) in the first innings, and Mr. K. J. Key (50 not out) in the fourth, got 50. Surrey’s chances when they wrent in at the finish, with 130 to win, were very small, and with four of the best batsmen out for five the match was apparently over. Mr. Key made a brilliant attempt to pull Surrey through, but Lancashire had too much in hand, and won eventually by 44 runs. Lancashire, 143 and 94 ; total, 237. Surrey, 108 and 85 ; total, 193. Notts, Manchester, Aug. 22, 23 and 24« Notts were without Gunn and Flowers, and Lancashire thus encouraged played a u slogging" game with immense success. Mr. McLaren added one more to his long list of great performances this summer by putting together a score of 152 with hardly a mistake. Albert Ward (92) w*as bowled when he M^emed certain to get his hundred. On the Notts side it was to some extent Mr. Jones s match, as the amateur, in addition to taking four wickets, played two admirable innings of 57 and 53. He had not before been seen to such advantage for the County. Mr. Dixon was in just as fine form, and his 83 not out was up to his best standard Despite this, how*ever, Notts wrero only • able to put their powerful opponents in again, and Lancashire won by ten wickets Lancashire, 367 and 8 (no wicket) ; total, 375.
