James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

102 I ILL\WHITE ’ S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. L A N C A SH IR E . O f f i c e r s f o r 1895.— President: A. N. Ilornby. Committee: W. E. Openshaw Harry Thornber, E. B. Rowley, E. Challender, R. Walker, S. M. Crosfield R. Gorton, A. Appleby, G. Walsh, A. E. Pope, C. G.Hulton,0. P. Lancashire’ A. T. Kemble, John Stanning, Henry Fairclough, Edward Roper. Hon Secretary: S. H. Swire. Hon. Treasurer: J. McLaren. Assistant Secretary and Collector: F. Reynolds, 26, Barton Arcade, Manchester. A v e r y good second to Surrey is, perhaps, the best tribute that can be paid to Lancashire’s all-round cricket. In some respects they were unfortunate. In the first place, Mr. A. C. McLaren was only able to play regularly in the latter part of the season, and his brilliant form is sufficient to represent the difference there might have been if he had been able to go through the summer. The continuous rain, which prevented even the commencement of the Somersetshire match at Manchester, was not a good thing for Lancashire, it will be admitted, in view of the County’s position at the finish. How much Mr. McLaren's extraordinary batting contributed to Lancashire’s success a glance at the batting averages will show. Ward, too, in only a slightly lesser degree, and Paul, Baker, Bugg, and C. Smith all lent valuable assistance. The bowling rested, as it has for some years, on Mold and Briggs, and their continued success has been a piece of good fortune for Lancashire. A word of praise, too, is due to C. Smith, whose wicket-keeping was reliable throughout. In Tyldesley the County has a promising young batsman, with every chance of a successful future.
