James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

THE COUNTIES IN 1 8 9 5 . 101 (17) K en t v . O x fo rd U n iv e r s i ty . Maidstone, June 27, 28 and 29. Without Messrs. Rashleigh, Wilson, and Patterson, the County were only weakly represented. Still, it proved a long scoring match, each side sending up the hundred before a wicket fell. The Dark Blues waited until Mr. Smith had completed his hundred before putting the closure rule in force ; his “ century ” took him two hours and twenty minutes, and he made sure of his “ blue ” by scoring 134 runs without getting out once. Mr. H. K. Foster did even better, scoring 57 each time, while Mr. C. B. Fry s 99 was a fine display. The County came within measurable reach of the University's total, thanks largely to a great innings of 105 by Alec Hearne, distinguished by all his w'ell- known patience. Still, the task was too heavy a one for Kent, and Oxford won by 215 runs. Oxford, 327 and 384 ; total, 711. Kent, 313 and 183 ; total, 496. BATTING AVERAGES. A.
