James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
THE COUNTIES IN 1 8 9 5 . 91 H A M P S H IR E . O fficers for 1895.— P resid en t: Capt. E . G. Wynyard. Committee: J 0 Moberly, Lieut.-Col. Wallace, E . L . Ede, R S. Hankinson, C. Lamport, C. Robson, G. F. Mortimer, J. A. Fort, Capt. L. Russell, Major Bethune, H. Holmes, A. J. L . Hill. lion . Sec . : Dr. H. W . R. Bencraft. T h o u g h the eleven were not so successful in the later fixtures, still Hamp shire’s all-round cricket in 1895 was quite good enough to more than justify the County s elevation to the front rank. Unfortunately for them Capt. Wynyard, whose batting was one of the sensations of the previous year, never got into form at all, and his failure naturally had a very prejudicial effect. Still, on many important occasions the Hampshire eleven proved their capacity as an all-round side, notably at Sheffield, when they gained a very creditable victory over Yorkshire. In Baldwin and Soar they had twro reliable bowlers, with, later in the season, another almost equally effective in Wootton, whilom of Kent. Mr. A. J. L . H i l l ’s batting was one of the best features, and with Capt. Quinton, Capt. Wynyard , Messrs. H. F. Ward, C. J. Richards, and Bencraft, and Barton, there is the nucleus of a good batting side. That Mr. R. A. Studd, of the Cambridge University eleven, could only play rarely was a great dis appointment. R e su lts o f M atches .
