James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
THE COUNTIES IN 1895. 89 (15) G loucestershire v. Yorksh ire . Cheltenham , Aug. 22, 23 and 24. A memorable ,week, from the Gloucestershire standpoint, terminated in another glorious victory for that County. It was also remarkable for the fact that Mr. Townsend completed the feat of capturing 100 wickets in what was practically his first year of first-rate cricket. At the end of an innings apiece there was only a difference of two runs; but then, on a wicket made soft and easy, came a great falling off. Brown and Tunnicliffe scored 66 for the first wicket, making 50 in 35 minutes; and the former’s 52 was. with Moorhouse’s 70 in the first “ hands,” the best for Yorkshire. When Messrs. Grace and Ferris started to hit off the runs they came so slowly that only 23 were got in 45 minutes. Then they forced the pace, and Gloucestershire won in splendid style by seven wickets. Townsend's second innings record was seven wickets for 54. Yorkshire, 221 and 143; total, 364. Gloucestershire, 219 and 147 (3 wickets); total, 366. (16) G loucestershire v . Surrey . Clifton, Aug . 26, 27 and 28. An excellent show against a powerful team of the Champion County, and anyone’s match at the close. Surrey found a place for Mr. H. Leveson-Gower, of the Oxford eleven. Everyone was delighted with the way in which Maurice Read finished up the season, his opening score of 88 being quite in his old free style. Abel was second best scorer on the side with 38 and 39, and these two made most of the runs. For Gloucestershire Mr. Ferris (58) and Wrathall (59) made a useful stand. With Wood away, 22 “ extras ” were recorded against Surrey, who declared their innings closed, but to no practical purpose. Mr. Townsend took twelve Surrey wickets for 175 runs. The match was drawn, Gloucestershire wanting 96 to win with three wickets to fall. Surrey, 1S2 and 193 (9 wickets, innings declared); total, 375. Gloucestershire, 243 and 37 (7 wickets); total, 280. A brilliant finish to a series of successes in Somersetshire’s home matches. It was a fairly high scoring game throughout, with Somersetshire a little in hand to the ‘ finish. W. G. only scored 35 for Gloucestershire in the two innings, and his failure naturally affected the side. Mr. C. L. Townsend i,6 and 62), Painter (14 and 4), and Mr. Ferris (4 and 52) were the three be^t scorers for Gloucestershire; and Messrs. D. Is. Roe (71 and 4), L. G. • Palairet ( lan d 68), and C .E . Dunlop (51 and 12) for Somersetshire Mr l . L. Townsend’s twelve wickets for Gloucestershire cost 225, Tyler s eleven or Somersetshire 222 runs. Somersetshire won by 57 runs. Somerset, -uo and 199 ; total, 434. Gloucestershire, 122 and 255 ; total, 377.
