Though with this match Gloucestershire entered upon a season that was to prove even more disastrous than that of 1893, the result of the opening contest was to leave them with a victory by eight wickets . Sussex began promisingly on a slow wicket with an innings of 218, in which the batting of Messrs . Newham (55), Murdoch (46), and Arlington was the chief feature . Gloucestershire in their turn were able to improve upon this total with a score of 259, for which they were mainly indebted to Mr. W. G. Grace, whose 88 were got in his best style . Mr. W. Troup , Brown, Painter , and Wrathall , whose first appearance it was for the county , also batted with success . The bowling of Roberts , who took eight wickets in the match at a cost of 47 runs, proved so effective (helped by the wicket ) when Sussex went in a second time, that the side were all dismissed for 73. Beanand Humphreyswere the only batsmen to reach double figures . With but 33 needed to win, Gloucestershire had an easy task, making the runs for the loss of two batsmen . Gloucestershire , 259 and 35 (two wickets ); Sussex , 218 and 73; total , 291. (2) Gloucestershirev. Surrey. Oval, M a y17 and18. Though Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to take first innings , their display was very disappointing . W. G. was run out when he had made only 9, and his early dismissal was of course disastrous to the side . Indeed , Painter (19), Mr. Kitcat (14), and Capt. Newham(not out 16), were the only double -figure contributors , and the essay closed for 82. Richardson and Smith bowled unchanged through -out the innings , the latter taking five for 27, the fast bowler four for 45 runs . Surrey then had a long stay at the wickets , with the result a big total of 386. To this sum Brockwell contributed a faultless 107, his first century for
