O fGloucestershire's cricket little canbe written, that has not been written of late years. The brothers Grace are not getting younger, and although W. G.'s batting showed little if any falling off , as an all -round cricketer he did not stand out so prominently for Gloucestershire . His best performances indeed were recorded in other representative matches , and his batting average for the County was not up to the standard of previous years . In batting as well as in bowling the figures were decidedly poor . In batting Mr. Ferris was second with less than thirteen , which was sufficient alone to show the weakness of the side as run getters . Mr. C. L. Townsend who had madesuch a successful first appearance in 1893, did not in any way come up to that standard as a bowler , a great disappointment after his early promise . Nordid the bowlers as a rule get the support they might have expected from the field . The one hopeful sign during the season was the introduction of Mr. G. L. Jessop , a fine hitter , a fair bowler , and asmart field . He bids fair to be of great use.
