Arun getting match, won after a most exciting finish by Hampshire. Essex going in against a total of 192, succeeded in heading their opponents by nine runs . The excitement was reserved for the second stage of the game. In Hampshire's second innings , Mr. A. J. L. Hill (114) and Barton (77) put on 143 in an hour and three quarters for the second wicket , and by the completion of the second day they hadmade240 for the loss of only two batsmen. Onthe following morning, however, the Essex bowlers carried everything before them, with the result that the eight outstanding wickets only added 23 runs . Thoughthey had 250 to get to win, Messrs . Mc Gahey(103) and F. E. Rowe(62) madesuch a determined stand , that Essex seemed likely to win with plenty to spare . As it was, whenthey were separated , the bowlers were seen to greater advantage , so that in the end Hamp- shire wonwith only nine runs to spare . Hampshire, 192 and 263 : total , 455. Essex were fielding at the outset four hours and a quarter for a total of 282. Of this , two batsmen, Captain Wynyard (108), and Mr. C. Robson (72), contributed 180. The former was in two hours , and the latter two hours and a half . Captain Wynward's innings was the more remarkable as it was his third consecutive score of over a hundred for Hants . The batting of Essex was very disappointing . The second innings only lasted an hour and twenty minutes , and Mead, who carried out his bat, made 34 of the last 45 runs .
