James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1895
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1894. 7 1 E S S E X . OFFICERS FOR 1894 .-- President , Lord Carlingford . Hon. Treasurer , C. M. Tebbut. Committee , G. Buxton, W. H. Pemberton-Barnes , F. R. Pelly , R. Y. Bevan, R. Cook, A. J. Edwards, R. C. Gosling , F. W. Holton, G. Pagenstecher , W. Comerford , A. S. Johnston , A. P. Lucas, A. A. Timbrell , J. J. Read, C. R. Higgins , Secretary , O. R. Borradaile . The comparative failure of Mr. Kortright's bowling in comparison with the previous year, interfered of course with the general result of the side . The wickets mostly were hardly in his favour , and this mayto some extent explain his ill success . A tthe same time he seemed to have lost some of his pace , and certainly it did not appear as if there was quite the same sting in his bowling . Onthe other hand, helped by the wickets , Meadwas generally successful even if he had not the credit of such an exceptional performance as against the Australians in the previous year . On occasion the eleven showed themselves to be capable run -getters , and even the tail in several important instances did very well . Though defeated they made a good show against Yorkshire at Leyton, and if Oxfords " bowling was not by anymeans of a high quality , still their batting was seen to great advantage against the University at Leyton. Pougher's all-round cricket was the chief factor in Leicestershire's success . H etook fourteen wickets in the match at a cost of just over six runs apiece , besides scoring 114 for once out. His second score of 109 (not out), too, was without a mistake till just before he was out. The first innings of Essex only lasted an hour and a half , and the only double figure was Carpenter's 20. They had to go in for the fourth innings with 342 to win, and thanks mainly to Mr. H. G. Owen(76), made a very creditable score of 273. Leicestershire wonby 68 runs .
