Rain limited the play on the first day to a little over an hour, and the wicket subsequently helped the bowlers to such an extent that the match only just lasted into the third morning. Goingin first Sussex hadmade85 whenthe third wicket fell on the second morning. Mr. Bathurst , of the Oxford eleven , whomade his first appearance for Middlesex in this match, however, as the ground dried , bowled with such effect that the remaining batsmen only added 37. Middlesex in their turn made50 for the loss of only one wicket , and in their turn collapsed before the bowling of Mr. Kentfield and Parris to the tune of 32 for the last eight wickets. W h e nSussex wentin again Mr. Bathurst and Hearnewere evenmore successful . Stanning and C. P. Nicholls (109) put on 207 for Rugby'ssecond wicket in anhourand forty minutes. The former carried his bat through the innings for 152. J. Graham(27 and 70) was far and away the highest scorer for Marlborough . Rugby's total of 398 was madein four hours and twenty minutes . Amatchwonafter a most exciting finish by Cheltenharn , with only one run to spare . The scoring was pretty even , as the totals of the four innings only showed a difference of 66 runs . Miles (3 and 88) was the principal scorer for Haileybury ; H. B. Jeffery (37 and 78 not out), and E. C. O. Graham(13 and70) for Cheltenham . Though they lost the toss the wicket was in such capital condition for run- getting , that Middlesex with a strong side , were confidently expected to make a goodshow. A sit was, Lancashire got such a long lead on the first innings, that their victory was assured. B yfar the best batting on the Middlesex side was that of M r, Stoddart. H escored 68 and84, or 152 for the match, andas heh a d recently been out of luck, his success was very popular . Sugg (75), Mr. F. S. M. Tindall (60), Paul (58), and Baker (50), were the chief contributors to Lanca- shire's first total . Sugg and Mr. Tindall both hit with great vigour , and the former , while in with Paul, added 120 in an hour and a half . Lancashire won by nine wickets .
