Amatchfor the benefit of Sherwin, the old Notts wicket keeper , for many years engaged on the ground staff at Lords , the Committee of the Middlesex C. C. having generously decided to give the proceeds to Sherwin. Somersetshire having wonthe toss , in the hope of the ground improving put Middlesex in, a great mistake , as it afterwards proved . Messrs . Stoddart and Webbeput on 55 for the first wicket of Middlesex , and this proved to be the best stand of the match. Mr. Henery hit freely for 39 later in the Middlesex innings , and his 39 wasthehighest score onthe side. But the finest cricket of the matchwas Mr. W. N. Roe's second innings of 43 for Somersetshire . Considering the condition of the ground it was really a performance of great merit . Mr. L. H. Gay, who had previously played for Hants, madehis first appearance for Somersetshire in this match. Middlesex wonby ten wickets . Middlesex , 142 and 32 (no wicket ), total , 174 ; Somersetshire , 58and 113 ; total , 171. Rawlin(Middlesex ) O v e r s. M a i d e n s. 39.1 2 1 R u n s. The wicket at the outset was fairly easy after the recent rains , and Middlesex had the victory well assured whenthey secured a total of 223. Thebest cricket on the side wasshownby Rawlin, w h owasbatting for over two hours and a half for 67, made without anything like a mistake . Board's wicket -keeping too , was one of the best features of the innings . Four of the ten batsmen fell to him, all from good catches . Onadrying wicket Gloucester- shire found J. T. Hearne and Rawlin almost unplayable , and, indeed , Captain Luard (29 and 6) and Mr. Kitcat (15 and 12) alone got double figures in either innings . Middlesex wonby aninnings and104 runs . Middlesex , 223. Gloucester- shire , 72 and47; total, 119. O v e r s. M a i d e n s. R u n s. W i c k e t s. Rawlin(Middlesex..... J. T.
