H. Bateman-Champain : A quiet , but strong and capable captain ; had everyone admirably in hand. Played several beautiful innings , but did not bat so consistently as in former years ; a very smart point and moderate slow bowler .-J. W. Stratton ; Bowled with constant success , but sends downtoo manyloose balls to be anywhere near first- class . An excellent field anywhere . Has sound defence , but only one scoring stroke . E. H. B. Stanley ; His absence was a great loss to the batting . Astrong and resolute hitter , with good defence . F. R. Coates : Bowled an admirable length and pace at the begining of the year, but failed wholly later on. Canhit with enormous power , but little judgement . Fielding improved ; Picks up well , but still uncertian in catching . H. B. Jeffery ; Improved immensely . Played several excellent innings . His defence is as good as before , and his hitting is far harder . A moderate field and wicket -keeper . E. I. M. Barrett ; Ayouthful but sound and correct batsman ; times the ball admirably and cuts well . A good catch , but a bit slow onhis feet . H. H. C. Baird; Rather disappointing both as bat and bowler ; looked like being very good ; probably will be in the near future ; a
