James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1895
T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DPUBLICS C H O O L SIN 1894. 1 4 7 he gained control of pitch . He fielded very well . C. L. A. Smith : A steady bat, watches the ball ; but has rather a cramped style , and a fondness for illegiti- mate leg hits , faults which practice on sound wickets ought to cure . H ebowled a good length , mediumpace, in the earlier part of the season , but then fell off . H eis a sure fielder . F. B. Jackson : Made a great advance in batting , playing withconfidence , and sometimes scoring freely , but his height and reach have led him to develop forward play to excess . H emust learn to play back. His only place in the field seems to be point . R. A. B. Henry: Plays a wonderfully good defensive gamefor his size . H etimes the ball well , but has little hitting power. Cannot cover much ground in the field . C. F. J. Holmes : By dint of hard practice so improved his previously too mechanical style as to play some good innings . Buthe goes to meet the ball too much, and is still uncertain in his back play . His fielding was always good and at times brilliant . *E. E. Fort : Was disappointing both in batting and bowling ; in the first no doubt owing to short sightedness , in the second owing to his inability to control with any accuracy the length of his pitch . H ewas good in the field . D. J. Crump: Has a good eye and strong wrist , and will bat with style and success when he realizes the necessity of steady practice of defence , and gets over the tendency to pop straight balls to leg. He is a nimble fielder . E. E. Bottomley : Batted in a style of his ownwith some success , and was very useful in the field . He ought to try his hand at bowling. S. Bazalgette : Bowled, left hand medium, wlth a fair command of pitch andpace , but apparently could not stand being hit , and reaped but a poor analysis . Of his batting , the less said the better . He is slow in the field . C H A R T E R H O U S E S C H O O L Captainfor 1894.-E.Garnett. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . MatchesPlayed, 14; W o n, 5 ; D r a w n, 7 ; Lost, 2. Opponents. Club.
