Thoughthere was, perhaps , no great ground for congratulation in the record T h e of the Sussex Eleven, it was not altogether without satisfactory features . appearance of Alfred Shaw, who, after his retirement from Notts , cricket some twelve years before in the Eleven, under the residential qualification , brought with it a certain amount of luck . His first match was against Notts ., and as it produced the first victory Sussex hadbeen able to obtain over Notts for twenty years , it was of good omen. The only regret after his marked success , in the few matches in which he played , was that Shaw's departure from England with Lord Sheffield , left Sussex without his valuable help in the later matches. Still , as a bowler , Parris proved a success , and ought with more experience to be still more useful . The wickets , generally , were not of a kind to favour Humphrey's lobs , and his comparative failure affected the general success , of course . Mr. Newhamwas the bright particular star , and his play was con- stantly good throughout . Marlow and Beanwere generally to be relied on, andon the few occasions on which he played, Dr. Heasmanwas of great use. In Mr. Fry, the Oxford Captain, Sussex found a newplayer , whose all round cricket is bound to help the side . R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches Played (16), Won(3), Drawn(2), Lost (11). Club.
