Surrey's consistent success in 1894 was in a way remarkable for the reason that the side wasvery m u c hthe sameas that whichhadsuch a moderaterecord in the previous summer. Yetno one could gainsay the all round strength of the eleven . Only twice defeated in the championship series , they wonno less than thirteen of the sixteen matches, and made a tie of the fourteenth . In batting , though the tail failed occasionally the eleven were decidedly strong . Mr. W. W . Readwas at first out of luck, but later on played some fine innings . Brockwell's batting was one of the very best features of the season . Against all kinds of bowlers and on all sorts of wickets he was equally successful , and he was quite in the front rank of batsmen. Hayward, too , particularly during the latter part of the season , played fine cricket , and Abel, Lockwood, and Maurice Read, unfortun- ately disabled for a considerable part of the season , all rendered good service . Street came into the eleven regularly after Mr. Jephson retired , and showed him- self to be a batsmanof great nerve andconfidence . Richardson, owingto a strain, had to stand out of several matches early in the season . Still he bowled with remarkable success , and towards the end particularly Lockwood was at his very best . F. E. Smith, the left -hand bowler , proved a very valuable change , and his all -roundcricket wasof great use to his side. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
