Thornton, G. F. Vernon, V. E. Walker, I. D. Walker J. G. Walker, A. J. Webbe. Though at the end of the season they were able to claim the third place , a widegulf divided the Middlesex eleven from Yorkshire , who were second . In several respects the cricket was very disappointing . The wickets generally were not in favour of the batsmen, and the side was by no means as reliable for runs as in the past . Mr. Stoddart was not in the best health , and certainly not as dangerous with the bat. Mr. O'Brien , too, could only play in about half the matches , a great loss considering that he was in fine form. On the other hand Mr. Webbewas not as successful through an injury at Brighton , which no doubt took some of the heart out of him for the later matches . To compensate , Mr. R. S. Lucas madea marked advance as a batsman, and on the year's form showed him- self quite one of the surest run-getters in the eleven . The brunt of the bowling wasborne by J. T. Hearne and Rawlin, and on certain wickets they were as dangerous a pair as could well be found . In the Oxonian, Mr. L. C. V. Bathurst , Middlesex introduced an all -round cricketer of great promise . H e bowled in the later matches with remarkable success , and bids fair with ordinary luck to develop into a first -class player . R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
