James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1895
9 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. G. J. Mordaunt's batting on their side was quite one of the best features of the game. Hemade55 and 71, or 126 in the match, and though in the second innings he gave two chances just before he was out , against such bowlers as Briggs and Mold, it was a fine performance . Lancashire at the finish had 132 to get to win, and their success was chiefly due to the fine batting of Mr. McLaren. He made 82 out of 130 with only one chance just at the close , and his judgment and nerve were invaluable to his side. Mr. Bathurst took all the six wickets d o w nin Lancashire's second innings . Lancashire , 187 and 132 (six wickets ) ; total , 319 . Oxford University , 113 and 205 ; total , 318. L a n c a s h i r ev D e r b y s h i r e. Manchester, July2, 3, 4. Though they had all the worst of the first hands, Derbyshire made such a plucky fight that they were very near winning . Mr. McLaren and Albert W a r d again did the bulk of the run getting for Lancashire , the latter scoring 79, the former 64 in the match. H u l m ethis time was successful as a batsman, not as a bowler , and his 55 and 16 represented the highest aggregate on the side of Derbyshire . It was not an easy task for Derbyshire to make 187 in the fourth innings , and with half the wickets down for 73 the chances were all against them. Thanks to Chatterton mainly, however , the game got very exciting , and after all Lancashire only wonby 14 runs . Lancashire , 235 and 137 ; total , 372. Derby- shire , 186 and 172 ; total , 358 . Heavy rains reduced the actual cricket to less than a full day. Making the best of a wet and easy wicket Mr. McLaren (90) and Albert Ward(99) scored 170 before they were parted with a blank first day ; the second only admitted of the fall of two Lancashire wickets for 212 runs. O nthe third morningthe innings was closed with the total 228, and only three batsmen out. Nine Leicestershire wickets had been dismissed by the luncheon interval , but that was all that could be done as rain prevented further play . Pougher was not able to play for Leicestershire , and, as the wicket was, his bowling was greatly missed . Lancas- shire , 228 (for three wickets , innings closed ). Leicestershire , 69 (for nine wickets). Briggs (Lancashire ) O v e r s. 2 2 M a i d e n s. 1 2 L a n c a s h i r ev L e i c e s t e r s h i r e . Leicester , August27, 28, 29. R u n s. This time Baker (61) and Mr. MacLaren (30 and 33, not out) were the best scorers for Lancashire . Leicestershire made only a poor show in their first innings , and were completely puzzled by the slow bowling of Ellis , who took Briggs's place . In the follow on Messrs . De Trafford (52) and Hillyard (28) put on 81 for the first wicket , and Tomlin subsequently lent such useful help that the result was a total of 197. Lancashire wonby eight wickets .
