T h eBank Holidaymatch, set apart with the characteristic liberality of the Lancashire Committeeas a benefit for Briggs, one of the mainstaysof the County eleven for manyyears . Unfortunately for Briggs the wicket was so much affected by the heavy rainfall that the game was very nearly over in one day. As the ground was, the bowlers were bound to have all the best of it, and except for six overs Peel and Hirst were unchanged for Yorkshire . Baker and Briggs were the only batsmen to get double figures each time for Lancashire , and the former did well to score 20 and 17 (not out) in each case . The main credit of Yorkshire's score of 152 rested with the tail , and the last three batsmen just doubled the total . Mounsey's 36 for Yorkshire was the highest innings of the match. Yorkshire won by an innings and four runs . Yorkshire , 152. Lancashire , 50 and 98; total , 148. Hirst(Yorkshire) Wainwright (2nd Innings Lancashire ).. The re -appearance of Alfred Shaw, the old Notts bowler , after an absence of ten years from County cricket . Though the wicket was a little slow at the outset from recent rain , Lancashire did a good performance , staying at the wickets five hours for a total of 355. A. Ward, was in two hours and three -quarters for 69, butthemaincredit of the long score rested with the later batsmen. Baker (96), Briggs , (65), and Tinsley (53) indeed contributed 214 of 333 from the bat, andall threescores w e r etheresultof excellentcricket. T h efeatureof thefirst innings of Sussex was the fine performance of Mr. Newham. Going in first he saw the whole side out scoring 110 of 158 from the bat. In the follow -on Sussex, with the worst of the wicket , madea very bad show. Mr. Brannwas too lame to go
