James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1895
T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1894. 8 5 (6) K e n tv. Surrey. Catford Bridge , July 23, 24, and25. The first match of the Catford Bridge week, and one set apart by the Kent Committee as a benefit for Wootton, whobowled for the County with great success for several years . It was a bowlers ' match too, altogether , and in winning the toss Kent got a great help towards winning the match. The chief feature of Kent's innings was the excellent batting of Mr. Leslie Wilson who scored 80 runs out of an aggregate of 205. Withcertainly a bit the worst of the wicket , Surrey found rungetting difficult against the bowling of Walter Hearne and Martin .Abel (30 and18) and Brockwell (7 and 30) alone , did anything worthy of note and the two bowlers just namedwere unchanged in the match. Lockwood's bowling wasthe best feature of Surrey's cricket . Kentwonby 57 runs . Kent, 130 and 112 ; total , 222. Surrey , 77 and 91 ; total , 168 . W. This time Kent lost the toss , and lost the match in a great measure, if not altogether , as a consequence . Atall events Sussex got a big advantage in going in first , and after the first innings the result could hardly have been in doubt. Bean and Marlowmadethe best use of their time at the outset , while the wicket was fairly easy . They scored 48 in the first half -hour , and they were the only batsmen except Mr. Brann to get double figures . Kent fared even worse as in an hour and ten minutes the whole side were dismissed by Parris and Hilton , with Mr. F. M. Atkins's 8 as the highest contribution . In the follow -on Messrs . L. Wilson (33) and T. N. Perkins (24)helped themto makea muchbetter show ; the two Amateurs scoring 57 of 106 from the bat. Withonly 41 to win Bean scored 32 of the first 39 for Sussex , and he was the only batsman out in their second innings . Sussex wonby nine wickets , Sussex , 116 and 41 (one wicket ), total , 157. Taunton, July, 30, 31 andAugust1. After having all the worst of the first hands Somersetshire gained a very creditable victory . Rainhadm a d ethe wicket slow at the outset andKentdid well under the circumstances to reach a total of 220. For this they were chiefly indebted to Mr. Marchant (71) and Alec Hearne (66), who added 110 just the first total of Kent subsequently for the sixth wicket . In the follow -on Somersetshire showed some very level batting , nine of the eleven batsmen getting double figures Kent went in for the fourth innings with 121 to win on a wicket materially affected by heavy rain over -night . Six wickets were down for 22 and it was only a plucky stand by Messrs . K e m p(30) and Marchant (17) which enabled them to reach a total of 83. Somersetshire wonby 37 runs .
