T h eresult of L o r dH a w k e ' sfirst visit to Indiaat the h e a dof a t e a mof amateur cricketers had proved so enjoyable in every sense that a repetition at the earliest possible date was agreed upon without a dissentient voice . The second tour dulycame off during the winter of 1892-3 . This time the English cricket team was all round stronger than on the previous visit , and, as a consequence , even from a cricket standpoint , the trip fulfilled expectations thoroughly . Of 23 matches 15 were won, and 8 of these by more than an innings . As six games wereunfinished it will be seen the team were only defeated twice. TheParsees, whowere beaten in the return , though only by 7 runs, wonthe first match by 109 runs . The Behar Wanderers were also successful at Mozufferpore . O nthat occasion , however, A. E. Gibson played for the opposition , and his all- roundcricket fairly determined the result . A. J. L. Hill's all-round cricket was. the most noteworthy feature of the tour . Hehad not only the highest batting average but also the best aggregate , as well as the highest individual score . In addition, his 77 wickets were obtained at a cost of less thanseven runs apiece. T h ehighest collective score was483 in the last matchat Peshawur, the lowest 61 against Agra. Two individual scores of over 100 were made during the tour . Thefirst was 109 by F. S. Jackson against the U p-Country Clubs at Colombo on the wayout, the second 132 by A. J. L. Hill against All India at Allahabad . Scores of the various matches and averages follow .
