James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1894

T H E I G H T HA U S T R A L I A N T E A M. 2 7 man; tact , resource , variety , and power . His nerve and judgment were con- spicuous throughout , and for so young a player were most uncommon. Giffen's bowling was as accurate as ever , if there was perhaps not quite the same devil in it . Trumble, was a great success on notable occasions . His great height made him at times very effective , and as he uses his head well , he was generally to be relied on. Trott's leg breaks were occasionally , but not often ofuse. McLeodkept a good length , and was of use at times as a change, though he hardly came up to expectations . Bruce bowled occasionally with success . Little use was made of Coningham , as has already been remarked . On paper , the team ought to have been exceptionally good in the field . Trott , Bruce , Graham, andGregory all showed up well , but otherwise there was an uncertainty which proved fatal in many cases . In one important respect , the tour , it is right to say produced nothing but pleasant memories . The relations in fact , between the team and English cricketers generally , were of the best . This itself is a high testimony to the general conduct of the team, as well as to the personal qualities of Mr. Victor Cohen, the manager. The details of the tour follow . F I R S TM A T C H .
