T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DPUBLICS C H O O L SIN 1893 1 9 1 St. John'sCollege, Leatherhead.-- * G. S. F. Rutty , 1891-2-3 (212 ) ---Hasmadean excellent Captain ,shewing sound judgment in changing the bowling . A sa bat he has improved wonderfully on last year's form, being a powerful hitter with a good drive . Bowls mediumpace , keeping a fair length . Fields well , but is not a safe catch . Possibly fielding close to the wicket does not suit him. * W. B. Sandberg , 1891-2-3 (17). —Hasbecome this year a much more certain bat , though his average is not so high, chiefly owing to his failure in the last four matches. H ebats in good style , hits hard, and has a very fine cut . On his day gets wickets , bowling fast to medium. Works hard in the field , reliable catch . *R. M. Rees , 1891-2-3 (21.9 ).-Extremely good bat, but has a very stiff style . Hits well all round the wicket , especially on the off . A very smart wicket keeper , quick at stumping . During the winter should carefully study the rudiments of running . Hasgot the average bat . * F. H. Mustard, 1892-3 (15).--- Themost promising bat in the team, has a very free style and a nice off drive , but does not make enough use of the forward stroke . Mediumpaced bowler, sending down a good ball occasionally , but is rather erratic . Good field and generally a safe catch . * A. H. Hodson, 1891-2-3 (8).- H a snot come up to the expectation formed of himlast year, though considering the hard wickets has been fairly successful . Very liable to overpitch his balls . O n a sticky wicket has a big break -back. Should avoid trying to bowl fast , and should not blame his fielders whenhe gets hit. As a bat, hits hard on the off . Fair field . * S. E. Osborne , 1893 (17.8 ).— Verygood but awkward bat ; can keep his wicket up, and is generally safe for runs . Was especially good against the University O.J's . and Epsom. Strong on the leg . Very good field at either point or cover . * K. E. Warren , 1893 (13.3).-Hard hitter , and has played some very good innings , notably at Epsom andin the M.C.C. Has met with fair success as a bowler ; slow medium, with a deceptive action , keeping very low . Safe field . * C. E. Muckleston , 1892-3 (5.5 )- Disappointing bat , but improved towards the end of the season . Played good innings against the O. J's . and Surrey Club and Ground . Style fair , keeps a straight bat, but musthit muchharder . Goodfield at point , but uncertain catch . * A. J. Edwards, 1893 (67).-Goodbat whenhe plays steady ; at the beginning of the season he deluded himself into the idea that he could hit . Helped to pull two matches out of the fire -Finchley and O. J's . Good field in the country ; picks up the balls smartly . * B. B. Stokes , 1893. -Started in brilliant style , with a68 against Leatherhead , but has since done little . At the beginning of the season had a fine straight drive , but lost it and substituted a pull . Eminently safe field , poor catch . * W. C. J. Searlin , 1893. Poor bat ; with luck quickly knocks up runs . Sometimes can bowl, but is too fond of pitching them at the feet . Generally a good field . The following also played :- J. J. G. Carson , Fair bat, though not liable to make manyruns . Lost his place through his fielding , which was very slovenly . S. W. Spooner ,- D i dnot play manymatches , but has shewn he can bat. Failed to obtain a wicket , but should persevere in bowling . . F. H . M u s t a r d.. A .H . H o b s o n K .E. W a r r e n G . S. R u t t y W .B. Sandberg W .C. Flett (11.7 ) : Amost energetic captain , but lacking in self -confidence ; has not come up to expectation as a bowler , but has com- pensated for this by his improved batting ; smart, sure field , with quick return . J. Bell (5.1) : Has more than fulfilled his promise as a bowler ; bowls medium right , and well sustains his length and straightness through an innings ; fields well at short slip . E. N. Hodgkinson (27.3 ) : A finished and most effective bat, especially on the off -side ; greatly improved in defence , and well deserves his
