T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DPUBLICS C H O O L SIN 1893. 1 8 1 LORETTO ELEVEN IN 1893.-J. Christie Swanston (captain ) : Muchimproved as a bat ; has considerable defence , and some power of attack ; a slow left -hand bowler without muchbreak, but a good commandover the pitch ; an indifferent field ; a successful captain , who has kept the team well together ; 1891-2-3 . HarryA. Browne: A brilliant bat on anything but a sticky wicket ; hits very hard andclean , and has some capital strokes on the off -side ; apt to get im- patient ; a little more experience might makehim a first -class batsman ; a fair field at point , anda fast but erratic bowler , whohas sometimes met with success ; 1892-3 . William Drysdale : Has the makings of a good batsman; watches the ball well , and hits a loose ball hard; loses his wicket too often by playing across ; a dashing field at cover ; picks upclean and returns well ; has bowled lobs and fast right -hand; 1892-3 . A. St. John Woodcock : Often a useful bat ; hits loose bowling very hard indeed, but lacking in defence ; one of the best deep fields the teamhas had, andhas proved an absolutely safe catch ; the steadiest bowler in the Eleven ; has hardly met with the success he deserves ; 1892-3 . James A. Abercromby: The best bowler in the Eleven ; mediumslow right -hand with a puzzling break from off, andwhenhe keeps his length is very difficult to score off; a poor field ; in time might makea useful bat ; 1893. Frederic H. Dunn Pattison : Avery painstaking batsman with a stubborn defence ; night score more off the loose balls , but his innings are always useful to his side ; an energetic field ; 1893. Richard W. A. Marshall : A left -hand batsman and bowler; a disappointing bat ; has played some good innings , but too often throws his wicket away: a useful bowler with a dangerous ball to the off ; generally keeps a good length until he is hit, whenhe pitches short ; a casual field whohas caught some brilliant catches ; 1893. George W. Orr : A very safe catch and sure field ; aclumsy but determined batsman, whohas on at least oneoccasion played a sound defensive game; 1893. Frank Swanston : Apatient batsman; cuts hard and clean ; in playing back must learn to avoid hanging his batbehind his leg ; a sure field ; 1893. William J. Thomson : Avery promising wicket -keeper ; smart and generally reliable ; agood all -round batsman , and hits hardon the leg side ; his improvement during the season has been most marked, andis due to his untiring energy in practice ; 1893. Roland Waterhouse : As a bat has little defence ; hits fairly well, and on a hard wicket m a y prove dangerous . A brilliant long field , with a splendid return , for which he is. worth his place in any School Eleven ; 1893 T H EF O L L O W I N G A R EE I T H E RIN R E S I D E N C EA T T H EU N I V E R S I T I E SN O WO R W I L LB E B E F O R EN E X TS U M M E R .
