1 8 0 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. simple. A sa bat an ineffective hitter ; excellent field and catch. T. Gowans: A sa wicket -keeper he stands up well , and promises to be good ; very bad when he stands back ; as a bat has occasionally stuck in, but is at present stiff and awkward. D. Miller : Right-hand bowler , with a swinging delivery and slight breakback ; likely to be good when he gets steadier ; his batting is spoilt byan aimless flourish , which prevents himplaying straight . *W. H. Smith : Occasion- ally has shewnpluck and stubbornness in defence , butis too feeble a hitter to do much harm. His 'lobs ' have been successful several times , though rather expensive . J. A. Campbell : Agood backplayer with bad forward strokes : at present doesn't play straight ; gets runs on the on side ; slow and ineffective field. L O R E T T O S C H O O L . Captain for 1893, Mr. J.
