1 5 8 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. difficult to play on a fast wicket ; since taking to hitting has madesome exceed- ingly useful scores ; uncertain field , but goodat times. W. A. E. Austen: A very useful slow left -hand bowler, with a great deal of patience , and able to get a considerable amount of work on the ball ; a very smart field at times ; poor bat. W. B. L. Barrington : A much improved field ; throws in well , and is a safe catch in the country; a goodsteady bat, but an exceedingly slow scorer , with no idea of hitting . F. J. Peers : The safest catch in the Eleven, and a nin- valuable field either at point or in the country ; as a bat is perhaps alittle lacking in style , but hits freely and hard if set , and proved to be of great service to the Eleven ; can bowl a little . E. Garnett : A very steady and painstaking bat, and came on considerably during the latter part of the season ; a good field , especially at mid-on, picking up and throwing -in very smartly ; safe catch in the country . J. B. Dyne: Aplucky bat with plenty of freedom, but is a little apt to play across the ball ; as a change slow bowler almost invariably gets wickets , being very tempting to hit , and possessing plenty of perseverance ; uncertain field . *L. K. Smith : Has been very useful as a change fast bowler all the time he played for the Eleven ; uncertain bat, but hits hard if set ; has fielded well at times , butis notquick enough.
