James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1894

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1893. 3311 1 2 5 moderate. Singularly enough, the best stand was by the last two batsmen in Yorkshire's first innings . Hirst and Hunter, both played with great judgment, a n dthe fifty they put on for the tenth wicket , was the result of some of the best cricket of the match. Yorkshire found 76 wanted to win, not such an easy task after all , and indeed they were mainly indebted to a very useful 31 (not out) b yTunnicliffe for their success . Yorkshire wonby six wickets . Brighton, August24, 25, and26. R u n s. Wickets. 4 9 9 Abrilliant finish to a very successful season for Yorkshire . Though they w o nthe toss , and got first use of an excellent wicket , Sussex were eleven runs to thebad at the end of an innings . The early part of the batting gave strong promise of a really big score . Marlow alone , made 83 of the first 153, but after- wardscame a collapse , so complete that the last seven wickets only added 35 runs . Excepting Brown, too, the earlier batsman of Yorkshire did not play the lobs at all well, and Humphreys altogether got eight wickets for 98 runs . Thecom- m e n c e m e n tof the secondinnings of Sussex, wasa great contrast to that of the first . Sevenwickets were downfor 62, and it was only the resolute batting of Butt (67), andLowe(34not out), that madethe game a very open question . It was not openvery long, however, after Yorkshire went in, as only two batsmen were lost ingetting the 184 required to win. Yorkshire wonby eight wickets . Yorkshire , 203 and 185 (two wickets ) ; total , 388. Sussex, 192 and194 ; total , 386. Wainwright(Yorkshire ). O v e r s.
