T H ECOUNTIESIN 1893. 1 0 1 slightly , ranging between totals of 100 and 121. A. Ward, of Lancashire , so far too , h a dbeenthe highest scorer with twovery useful innings of 44 and22. Somer- setshire had to make141 in the fourth innings , and as the wicket was, this wasa difficult task. T w oshowers howeverm a d ethe groundeasier for a time and Hedley utilised the chance of a wet pitch so well as to make 54 out of 75 runs . Still as the gamecould not be finished the best substitute was a good draw, and Somersetshire would have had some trouble to make the 23 wanting whenrain finally stopped play with four wickets in hand. Mold was playing for England against Australians at Lord's , and Oakley a slow bowler was tried for Lancashire inhis place , with considerable success . Lancashire 121 and 119, total 240 ; Somer- setshire 100 and 118 (six wickets ) total 218. (6) L a n c a s h i r ev, M i d d l e s e x. Manchester, July, 20 a n d21. Witha wicket never quite recovered from the effects of a heavy rainfall , high scoring was quite out of the question . The toss , too, was a matter of great con- sequence , and in going in for the fourth innings Middlesex were at a great disad- vantage. Just at the outset the ball came along fairly easily , and Sugg was able to make63 in a cautious style not usually associated with his play. Thebatsmen of the punishing kind, were, as it is generally the case under such circumstances , seen tothe best advantage , and Messrs . Stoddart and O'Brien on the other side werethe mostsuccessful . Middlesexin the end had 158 to win but with M o l d and Briggs at their best , and a wicket to help them, it was long odds against the in-side . A sit was there were only four double figures , with Mr. Stoddart's 24 as the highest . The result was a victory for Lancashire by 68 runs . Lancashire , 164 and139, total , 303 ; Middlesex 146 and 89, total , 235. Mold(Lancashire ) O v e r s. M a i d e n s. 3 9 9 R u n s. 1 1 6 W i c k e t s . 1 2 (7) Lancashirev. Somersetshire. Liverpool , July. 24, 25, and 26. With the captain , Mr. H. T. Hewett, as well as Messrs . R. C. Palairet , Challen, andV. T. Hill , away, Somersetshire's chances were materially reduced . TheLancashire eleven as the game went were the better side at all points and their success was the reward of superior all -round cricket . In Lancashire's first innings Sugg and Albert Wardwere the chief figures , and the latter's 52 was the highest score of the first hands. In the second the same batsman were even in better form and thanks mainly to them, whenthe fifth wicket fell 273 was up, of which Wardhad contributed 92, and Sugg 88. Fortunately for Somerset the tail gave little trouble , so little indeed that the innings closed for an addition of only seventeen runs . Heavyrain still further spoiled the chance of Somersetshire on the third day, andas the fourth innings only produced 105 Lancashire had an easy winby230 runs . Lancashire , 189 and 290, total 429. Somersetshire , 144 and 105, total , 349. (8) Lancashirev. Surrey. Oval, July31 and August1. Lancashire , with the advantage of first innings , got such a good lead that Surrey would have had to do something sensational to save the game . The Lancashire eleven scored so fast that 265 was registered as the result of three hours and a quarter's batting . Of255 from the bat , Briggs alone contributed 112. A s178werem a d ewhile hewasin, it will be seen that he did the bulkof the run- getting . H ehas never shownbetter or more vigorous cricket , and there was not a fault of anykind to be urged against his innings . Following on in a minority of 119, Surrey fared a little better , a success due chiefly to the good cricket of Mr. W . W .Read(61) and Lockwood, the latter of whomcarried out his bat after making51 of the last 71 runs . Lancashire won by nine wickets . Lancashire , 265 and 84 two wickets ; total , 349.
