R u n s. 1 6 W i c k e t s. 4 In addition to being poorly represented , Kent had also the worst of the wicket, so that they were doubly handicapped . The Australians had the best of the luck in going in first , anddid fairly well considering , to make 194. Such a total as this seemed very improbable from the failure of the early batsmen, and indeed, the entire credit of the innings rested with Messrs . Bruce (77) andGregory (59) whowere responsible for morethan two-thirds of the aggregate . After the h e a v yrain of the previous night, the Kent batsmenfared badly on the second day. Trumble's bowling in particular was irresistible , and the county failed in their double innings to reach the Australians ' total by one run. Australians , 194. K e n t, 104and89; total, 193. H. Canterbury , August 7, 8, and 9. Thefirst matchof the Canterbury week, and a brilliant victory for Kent, after havingall the worst of the early part of the game. Kentdid well to get rid of the Australians , whowent in first , considering that Walter Hearne was unable to play, for a total of 229. Eventhis sum, too, was more than the Australians deserved , and they were fortunate in finding Kent's fielding very muchbelow its usual standard . Atthe end of aninnings the Australians had a lead of 102 runs , and as in the follow -on six of the best batsmen of Kent were out for 115, the victory seemed fairly assured for the Australians . A determined stand , how- ever, by Messrs . W. H. Patterson and Marchant, who put on 77 in forty-five minutes, improved Kent's position materially . As it was, though the Australians had only 97 to win, the bowling of Wright and Alec Hearne proved so successful that Bruce (23) alone got double figures . The total , indeed , only amountedto 60, andBannermanhad the distinction of carrying his bat through the innings , which lasted an hour and a half, for seven . Kentwonby 36 runs .
