Being the first half of Whit week, the fixture enabled Kent to collect a fairly representative side , including W.H. Patterson . Theresult , though , was a very creditable win for Gloucestershire , the more so as they had all the worst of the early part of the game. Twoamateurs , newto county cricket , represented Gloucestershire . These were Captain A. H. Luard, an old Cheltonian , and S. A. P. Kitcat , an old Marlburian . Both, too , acquitted themselves well , especially the latter , whoplayed two excellent innings of 46 and 52. The most successful batsman on the side of Gloucester was O. G. Radcliffe , and his second score of 117, which took him four hours and a half , was a characteristic display of resolute cricket . Gloucestershire , who just failed to save the follow on, eventually put their opponents in with 218 to win. As the fourth innings wasnot begun till after luncheon on the third day, there was quite a chance that Kentmight save the game. As it was, no one but Patterson , who made 102 in the match, and H. M. Braybrooke, did muchagainst the bowling of Woof andMurch, andGloucestershire wereable to win with 81 runs to spare. Glou- cestershire , 165 and297 ; total , 462. Kent, 245 and 136 ; total , 381 . Owingto recent rains the wicket at the start was soft , and Gloucestershire suffered rather than gained by going in first . Atleast none of the later batsmen except S. A. P. Kitcat , who made41 of the last 56 runs, and carried out his bat, could make any stay , and Captain Luard , Murch , Roberts , Board , and Brooks , only
