James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1893
T H EM A R Y L E B O N EC L U BIN 1892. 6 9 very fair form in their earlier matches , and the general belief was that they would win . These expectations were realised , but hardly to the extent that many hadexpected , and, indeed , though in all probability the better side onthe whole w o nstill there was not very much between the two schools on the form shown at Lord's . ThoughHarrowwere lucky enough to win the toss they lost some of their advantage by a bad start , and there was some excitement whenthe Eton captain bowled Barlow and Ferris in succession with the first two balls of the match . Thanks to the good play of their tail , however , Harrow were able to get a very useful lead of 70 runs on the first innings , very muchthe amountby which they led at the end. Asit was, but for the very bad judgment which lost three batsmen-all run out in the second innings of Eton, Harrowwouldhave been hard pressed . The batting of Eton was uneven, andin each innings practic- ally half the total was made by one batsman -C. E. Bromley -Martin 68 in the first , and D. H. Forbes 60 not out in the second . Harrowwere perhaps all round the better side , but neither was up to the best standard of the match. Harrowhas n o wwon29 times , Eton 26, and there have been eleven drawn games. (11 ) Marlboroughv. Rugby. July 27 and 28. Adouble record for the match. In the first place , Marlborough's innings of 432 is the highest so far on either side , as P. R. Creed's 213 is the best individual score . W. Mortimer , who went in first and made 106 , helped Creed to put on 263 runs for the second wicket , which is, if we mistake not, also a best performance for this particular contest . Creed was batting for four hours with only two chances , the first of stumping at 80, the second in the long field at 182. ThoughMarl- borough lost five wickets on the first night for 65 they madea good score after all , thanks to A. E. Slater who, after seeing nine wickets fall , carried out his bat for 76, andA. O.
