T H EUNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1892. 179 eleven ; he started the season very well indeed , but was unfortunate in not makingruns latterly ; with care he will make a first -rate player ; at times a successful bowler-slow with abig leg brake--but naturally depends very much o n the fielding ; is improving as a field . W eare fortunate in having him back for the coming season . C. V. Reynolds : Is improving in batting , and occasionally made a very useful stand at an important period in the game; a very fair wicket-keeper . D. S. Thorburn : A splendid hitter , and has at last realised the advantages of combining defence with hitting power; next year he should be a dangerous bat ; is improving as a field ; if he took pains he would makea good left -hand change bowler. P. Thomson : Avery steady , sound bat, with brilliant strokes off his legs ; otherwise lacks punishing powers ; both in driving andcutting he smothers the ball far too much; incomparably the best bat in the eleven. As a captain has managedwhat bowling there is badly, and has not the gift of keeping a team alert . W. McDuguid: A brilliant bat whenonce set , hitting well on the off ; has failed to comeoff till latterly owing to his trying to cut balls on the wicket ; a very safe and quick field at cover-point . * A. J. Lawrie : Adisappointing bat , falling off about the middle of the term ; has got into the wayof drawing away from the wicket and trying to pull the ball round , whichhas often lost him his wicket ; latterly not successful as a bowler, as shownby his average , but has bowled well, especially at the beginning of the term, occasionally varying his pace well ; his fielding , which is most uncertain , wouldbemuchimproved if he used two hands always . * E. S. G. Mather : A tremendous slogger ; on one or two occasions has played really good cricket ; a fair change bowler, keeping peculiarly low, but always on the short side , and never over -exerts himself either in bowling or fielding . F. H. Todd: Thebest bowlerin the eleven ; the only pity was that he was not found and tried earlier in the term; has a beautifully easy overhand action , with a nasty curl in from
