C. Scott (Captain ) : Was decidedly the best bat in the team; made runs consistently , though he really never brought off any big score , which maybe accounted for by an over -desire to score when others have failed ; an invaluable field at cover -point ; proved a good captain , his only weakness being in not having more frequent bowling changes . N. B. Gray: H edid not comeup to expectations as a bat, having lost his free style of playing forward, which was so noticeable in his batting the season before ; he can punish loose balls severely , and when set exhibits considerable promise ; avery good out -field with a good return . *J. H. Murray : H elost all his former sound defence , and has not fulfilled what was expected from him; a very slow field , but always did his best . *R. Mackay: Fell off considerably in his batting powers ; is an excellent change bowler , and most dangerous onasoft wicket ; is a plucky and successful field . E. Currie : In his batting he exhibited clean hitting with good defence ; would makea very fine bat with a little care ; a poor field . N. J. Fowlie : Bowled consistently well , though towards the end of the season he had the best bats to contend against , and his analysis suffered accordingly ; bowled with more judgment and " head " than season before ; a weakbat and poor field . C. H. Lenton : Afast bowler , but erratic and lacked judgment ; at times bowled with good success , but generally short ; came off with his batting in several matches ,but his defence is poor, and must learn to play straight ; an excellent field . * F. C. Justice : should develop into a very good bat, but was very disappointing , and was too easily discouraged by his want of success early in the season ; possesses a good reach naturally , but has developed a cramped and somewhat stiff style ; awkward and rather slow in the field . H. E. Kingston : The most promising bat in the
