1 7 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. A sa bat, though he has not done himself full justice this season , hehasan excellent defence with fine cutting and driving powers ; as a wicket -keeper he has shownhimself undoubtedly superior to anythat wehave had of late years ; in fact his wicket -keeping has been the feature of the fielding of the eleven . D. Ronald: An excellent steady bat, with good defence , but might makemoreuse of his strength in punishing loose balls ; a splendid out-field with a good return . to the wicket; and a fast but erratic change bowler ; captain for 1893. B. D. Bannon: A really good bat, especially on fast wickets ; plays in nice style and scores freely , but might pay more attention to loose balls on the off ; has much improved in the field . *C. S. Wood: An excellent slow bowler (right hand), breaking both ways; keeps a good length and uses his head well ; a fine hitter but lacks defence , and should therefore play a forcing game. K. Clarke : Has fallen far below all expectations both as a bat and bowler ; works very hardin the field and is generally safe . *W. F. Cooper : Has come on a lot since the beginning of the season , and should be very good next year ; plays a good free game, and is an excellent out-field , with a good return . * T. Latham : A good steady bat, with fair defence and considerable hitting powers ; has unfortunately beenquite out of formsince the first fewmatches; an excellent field at cover- point . G. M. Hill : A somewhatlucky batsman; hits well on the leg side, but should try and strengthen his defence and scoring abilities on the off ; goodfield at point . W . O. Hubbard: Has muchimproved both in batting and bowling since the beginning of the season ; bowls fastish right hand, and comes quick off the pitch ; safe but somewhatslow in the field ; should be good next year. E. N. Carlton : A very good bowler (right hand medium) ; always keeps a good length, andcomes back abit from the off ; should be very good next year ; poor batandfair field . H. J. Hilary : Agreatly improved batsman; plays forward hard and straight , but his back play is weak; sometimes bowls well , but varies in this respect ; rather slowin the field .
