B. Raikes ( Captain ) : Plays a strong , steady and correct gamein excellent style ; cuts and hits to leg well , but is apt to lift balls in the slips ; has not developed into so punishing a bat as was to be expected ; a successful bowler, difficult to see and time ; a safe if not brilliant field ; an excellent captain in every way. *C. J. Burrough : Has again proved of immense service to his side ; bats with care and confidence , and hits with judg- ment, but should open hisshoulders ; is too fond of leaving his ground in playing forward to the on ; is a steady , accurate and scientific bowler, who might vary his pace more; a good slip . *W. Ruston : Has still a tendency to unsteadiness in his ground; drives well to the off , but lets off a good manyloose balls ; does not back upwell , and is a bad judge of a run ; gets some work on the ball , and varies his pace , but is not careful enough about the length ; a fair , safe field , should keep his legs together . A. Leggett : Plays forward prettily , but not always straight , hits well to leg, but lacks steady defence and patience ; bowls straight but with too little attention to pitch ; a fair field ; he has not hadmuch opportunity for cricket . H. A. Rauthmell : Does not properly sight or time the ball , and consequently his defence is weak; he mustlearn to punish loose balls ; has a very good notion of bowling ; a plucky , safe field , but wants neatness . E. F. Rose : Has improved his defence very much; he must correct a bad trick of bending the right knee in leg -hitting , watch off balls more carefully , and keep theball downin hitting ; he plays hard in nice style , and should make a good bat; a somewhat random bowler, who should improve himself with steady practice ; a good, smartfield , and safe catch . *C. H. Leggett : Cankeep his wicket up, but wants power, and shifts the right foot in forward play ; a useful changebowler, and difficult on a ground that suits him, but apt to overpitch ; a fairly safe field , should get both hands to the ball . *W. Auden: Apainstaking , rather stiff bat, wants vigour and smartness ; drives fairly well, but misses many opportunities of scoring ; a plucky but not dashing field ; not a safe catch . R. T. Smith : A brilliant cover-point , with a smart and accurate return , but not a safe catch ; whenhe can face the bowling he shows all the makingof an ex- cellent bat ; has notions of slow bowling , but wants nerve and practice . C. L. Alexander : At present appears to play at the pitch , and is therefore very in- secure for the first few overs ; if he survives , he is sure to make runs , as he plays hard off -drives finely , and is not afraid to hit ; a fair bowler and good field . J. McLintock's play is at present rather feeble and nervous , and he does
