James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1893

T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DPUBLICS C H O O L SIN 1892. 1 6 9 SHERBORNEELEVENIN 1892.-H. H. Joy : Has bowled consistently well , keeping a good length , and varying his pace with judgment; with his high left-handeddelivery should develop into a first -class bowler ; as a batsmanhas hit consistently hard, but not always with judgment; a good point , and safe catch anywhere ; has been a successful captain , and with more confidence and energyshould next year prove very strong . *P. D. Hunter : Has the makings of a good cricketer ; singularly unsuccessful at the beginning of the season , but improvedvery muchwith the bat later on; as a change bowler invariably got his wicket, having considerable break and a puzzling action ; a smart field withaccurate return . J. E. Stevens : The best bat in the eleven , having good style andgreat hitting powers , but too fond of trying to pull at straight and good- length balls before he is set ; a fair change bowler ; should prove a most useful m a n all round next season . *H. F. Bundock : Showedgood form at the be- ginning andend of the season ; rather lacks freedom, but plays with a straight bat; amediumleft -hand bowler and good field . L. C. Powys : Has strong defence ; repeatedly made a useful stand at a critical period ; might with ad- vantage cultivate a freer and less crouching style ; as a bowler hardly cameup to expectations , but did muchuseful work; has developed a somewhatlaborious action , and lost commandof the ball . *R. B. Wright: Afree bat, with a good stroke on the leg side , without strong defence ; covers a lot of ground in the field , and throws in from any distance . A. C. C. Wright : A promising bat withpretty style , but wanting power at present ; has an easy action , and a very fair notion of bowling ; can field well but rather slack at times . W. J. Bensly : Bats in a style of his own, which though stiff , has proved by no means ineffec- tual ; has kept wicket very respectably , and shows promise of rising above the average in this department . C. A. S. Ridout : A laborious student of the game, whoseefforts met, though late in the season , with well -deserved success ; keeps a straight bat, but too gentle on the loose ones ; an energetic field , but with plenty of room for improvement. *H. P- S. Devitt : A painstaking but not a powerful batsman; his defence on several occasions saved the credit of the tail ; an active field with poor return . H. Laurie : Has some notion of keeping up his wicket, but not quite up to the eleven standard yet ; shows promise , and with more serious attention to business , especially in the field , should be a useful membernext year.
