Upcher (Captain ) : A better bat than his average makes him out to be ; for a long time was out of form , and lost confi- dence; lately has made more use of the forward stroke , and so improved his defence ; can hit on the off -side , but cramps himself too much to playwellto leg; a hard-working field , whogets in the wayof the hard ones at mid-off . C. C. Barker has disappointed us very much; he seems to have lost all nerve , and in consequence never plays his true game ; his fielding is not so good as it was last year, though he does some brilliant things , and has muchimproved lately . C. J. B. Webb : Not quite so good as we hoped he would be onhis form last year, whenhis play on the on-side was remarkably good ; this year he has lost some of his leg strokes ; still he is the best bat on the side , and has played some capital innings ; bowls slow , with a good break , but his length is too erratic ; a safe though clumsy field , and always works hard . B. H. D. Oxenden : The best bowler on the side , and would be very good indeed if he did not bowl quite so manyto leg ; his pace and high action make him difficult to play ; has a very good yorker ; a beautiful field , and absolutely safe catch ; his return made a great difference to the team; can hit . H. S. Chinnock : A useful cricketer ; a steady medium-paced bowler , occasionally bowling a ball that comes with his arm; hits hard, andseems quite free from nervousness , but his style is his own; excellent field . B. L. Lawrence : Amuch improved cricketer , and an example of the excellent results which work and care can produce ; bats in ugly style , but watches the ball very well , so that his wicket is difficult to get ; always re- liable and cheerful in the field . E. Elkington : A useful all -round player , but has been kept out of the team by illness since the first few matches . G. B. Scobell : A promising bat of the slashing order , who has often got runs when others failed ; rather fell off at the end through trying to hit everything ; must watchthe ball more ; slow and uncertain field ; can bowl a bit . B. A.Bailey : Aleft -handed bat , with good style , and some nice strokes on the off -side ; should be very good next year if he will overcome a certain tendency to laziness , which also affects his fielding . A. F. Soames : Plays with a straight bat , and in pretty style , but for a slight " flourish " ; promised well as a bowler , vler but got short through trying to bowl too fast ; poor field . H. R. Blunt : Has worked very hard behind the wicket , where his agility and reach , coupled with sureness of hand , have brought off many catches ; we have hopes of his batting for next
