Accidents prevented both S. M. J. Woodsand J. J. Ferris from playing , and inthe absence of E. A. Nepeanthe w e a kbowlingof the Gentlemenwas still further reduced . Owingto a strain , too , W. G. was unable to play, and as Gunn and Attewell were also awayowing to injuries , neither side was representative . Still some very fair all -round cricket was shown, although anyoutside chance the Gentlemen might have had was still further reduced by their loss of the toss . Thechief feature of the match was the batting of Shrewsbury. Hewent through the first innings of the Players , and was batting for five hours , with only one hardish chance in the slips whenhe had got twelve . This was the highest individual score for the Players against the Gentlemen at the Oval. Wells , Berkeley, and Gaymadetheir first appearance for the Gentlemen; Henderson andRawlin for the Players .
