For the scratch eleven , Ernest Smith led off with a fine innings of 122-marred by seven chances , but exceptionally brilliant nevertheless . In the second innings , moreover, he was ably supported by W. L. Murdoch (83) and Stoddart (73). If time and weather hadpermitted , the county wouldhave h a dto face the difficult task of going in to get 280 runs.
