Surrey missed the services of J. Shuter , K. J. Key, and Wood; Derbyshire , those of Hall and G. G. Walker. Apart from its closeness there was very little in the game, Richardson's bowling being perhaps the best feature . Surrey wonby seven wickets . Surrey, 126 and 168 (three wickets ) ; total , 294. TheSurrey executive had agreed to send their full strength up to Edin- burgh, and the Scottish players paid the penalty . W. W. Read (156), who wasin for over three hours , received material assistance from his captain (58) andLohmann(44) in particular . G. Key(143) and Henderson (133) madea great stand , punishing the weakbowling , and adding 172 for the sixth wicket . Someof the Northern batsmen profited by the looseness of Surrey's fielding towards the close , and H. J. Stevenson , the International footballer , in particular , hit with great vigour for 48 not out. Surrey wonby an innings and 146runs. Surrey, 484. Scotland , 114 and 224 ; total , 338 . ThoughSurrey had only three of its regular team in, Mr. W . W . Read, Brockwell and Richardson , it proved just strong enough for the task in hand. Essex lacked the services of Messrs . A. P. Lucas, Kortright , and Johnston. Thanks to some fine batting by Mr. F. E. Rowe(129), Mr. Taberer , and Car- penter , they had, however , all the best of the opening stage of the game. After- wards, though, Surrey played up splendidly , and at the finish their opponents could not quite recover the lost ground . Surrey won a finely contested game by 17 runs only . Surrey , 176 and 341 ; total , 517. Essex , 351 and 149 ; total , 510 . (14) Surrey v. Leicestershire . Leicester , August 4 and 5. Surrey , who were without their captain , J. Shuter , and Lockwood, got so far ahead quite at the start as to hold the game well in hand throughout . Maurice Read's finely -got 131 , which headed the score , was almost free from fault of
