James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1893

T H ECOUNTIESIN 1892 1 0 7 return fromAustralia , too , might have had a very serious effect on the prospect ofthe county. Asit was, a very fair substitute wasfound in the colt Richardson , and, considering that it was the latter's introduction to first -class cricket , he acquitted himself very satisfactorily . Still , there was not quite as much bowling as could be wished . Lohmannwas never in quite the best of health during the season , andhe was, in consequence , hardly at his very best . O nthe other hand, Lockwoodwas remarkably successful throughout , and he was, beyond a doubt, the best fast bowler of the day. Abel's slows , too, were at times very useful as a change . If the scoring in some cases was hardly as high as in 1891 , the batting was very level . Unsuccessful in the early part of the season , W . W. Read played himself into his very best form by the middle of the season , and had the best average on the side . Abel, Henderson, andJ. Shuter also did good service throughout , as did Maurice Readand Lohmannat times . InBaldwin the county introduced a very likely batsman-one of the steady type , who is sure to be of use. Wood'sabsence handicapped the out-cricket greatly , but generally the fielding was up to a high standard . Resultsof M a t c h e s. Matches Played, 16 ; Won, 13 ; Drawn, 1 ; Lost , 2. Club. Opnts.
