THEperformances of the Somersetshire eleven furnished , perhaps , the great sensation of the year in county cricket . That the success of the teamwas in a great measure the work of three menmaybe accepted as true on the main. Theconsistently brilliant scoring of H. T. Hewett and L. C. H. Palairet , and the bowling of S. M. J. Woodswere very important factors in the success of the side . Still , these were not the only elements of greatness . In J. B. Challen , V. T. Hill , of inter - university fame, and W. C. Hedley, were three batsmen each and all likely to be very dangerous . Of bowling, too , with Hedley, Tyler , and Nichols, as well as Palairet , there was a fair amountof change, all likely to be of use with a particularly good fielding side . Thescoring of Hewett and Palairet was remarkable for its consistency . It culminated in an extraordinary record against Yorkshire at Tauntonin August. O nthat occasion Somersetshire scored 592, and the two amateurs just named established a newrecord in putting on 346 before a wicket fell . O n public form Somersetshire had few superiors in 1 8 9 2. *K e n t R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches Played , 16 ; Won, 8 ; Drawn, 3 ; Lost, 5. Opponents.
